"What happens to my money if this fails?"

Asking this question forces founders to confront the reality of failure and explain how they’ve prepared for it.

What to Listen For

1. Transparency About Risk

   • A good founder will acknowledge the risks and explain their contingency plans.
   • A bad founder will dodge the question or say, "Failure isn’t an option."

2. Investor Protections

   • Are there legal safeguards (e.g., escrow accounts, insurance, or guarantees)?
   • Is your investment secured by assets or just a promise?

3. Exit Strategy for Investors

   • If the company fails, will you get anything back? (e.g., partial refunds, equity in a new venture, or assets?)
   • If the answer is "nothing," you’re gambling, not investing.

Red Flags in Their Answer

• "We don’t think about failure." → Naive or dishonest.
• "You’ll lose everything." → High risk, no protections.
• "We’ll figure it out later." → No plan, no preparation.

The Follow-Up Questions

If they give a vague answer, dig deeper:

• "What percentage of my investment is protected?"
• "Have you ever returned money to investors after a failure?"
• "What’s your personal financial stake in this?"
